Reiki Defined

Mikao Usui

Reiki is a Japanese technique of energy healing that was developed in the early 1900s by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Tendai Buddhist and renowned healer. It is a simple, yet highly effective technique that can be easily learned by anyone, regardless of their spiritual beliefs or intellectual capacity. The word “Reiki” is derived from two Japanese ideograms: “Rei”, meaning universal, spiritual, or divine, and “Ki”, meaning life energy.

“Ki” is also known as “Chi” in the Chinese language, and “Prana” in Sanskrit. Ki is the vital energetic force that animates all living things. Where there is life, there is Ki, and where there is Ki, there is life. Ki flows through all living things.

It is this flow of Ki that animates our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies. When Ki flows freely and unimpeded throughout these bodies, we experience a state of wellness and contentment. When the flow of Ki is impeded or restricted, we become more vulnerable to illness, anxiety and unease.

All forms of healing work with this vital energy, but Reiki is, in many ways, unique.

The most common definition of the Japanese word, “Rei” is “universal” or “omnipresent”. Yet Japanese ideograms often contain various levels of meaning, ranging from the fairly simple and mundane to the more complex and esoteric. The work “Rei”, as used in the context of Reiki, can be interpreted as meaning “spiritually guided” or “divine”. In summary, Reiki is a spiritually guided current of life energy, with its own consciousness and intelligence. Reiki understands us individually, knowing the cause of all illness and the most effective way to heal it.
